Common Myths About LASIK

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is one of the most successful eye surgeries performed all over the world. It’s high success rate and satisfying results are two major reasons why it has become popular in the Middle East region. You can find abundant clinics that specialize in performing LASIK surgery in Dubai.

Being one of the most prominent surgeries, it also comes with a few rumours and myths that need to be clarified. Let’s discuss some of them here:

Myth #1: There is an Age Limit for LASIK

Although it’s recommended that you wait until you are at least 18 to qualify for a LASIK treatment, there is no restriction whatsoever on when you get surgery after that. In fact, since it treats certain errors and vision problems that occur due to old age, it’s recommended to get it at a later time as well. People in their 40’s or 50’s can also qualify for a LASIK treatment.

Having established that, you should know that certain problems prevent you from qualifying as a candidate for LASIK treatments. These diseases are glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, etc.

Myth #2: There are Long-Term Effects of LASIK

A lot of people that don’t have enough knowledge about the surgery think that it’s a new surgery that isn’t really evaluated. They go further on to assume that this surgery has harmful side effects that can last for a long time.

This notion is completely false. The surgery didn’t make it to the commercial market until it was well-tested and evaluated. In fact, the current state of the treatment is a testament to the fact that it reaps great results. It has been over 25 years since the advent of the surgery and it continues to produce satisfying results to this day. Moreover, with the advancements in technological inventories, the procedure has significantly improved upon the few complications LASIK surgeons faced during the process.

Myth #3: It’s a Painful Treatment

The ongoing rumour that this treatment is painful is also false. Quite to the contrary, it’s a very easy procedure that is completely painless. You are not exposed to any needles that are piercing through your bodies or your eyes. With the use of a laser, the surgeons make the required changes to the surface of the cornea and your overall eyes.

Throughout the process, you might feel numb due to the drops that are applied before the treatment begins. This is to further decrease the chances of feeling discomfort during the process. Other than that, you’re liable to feel a little pressure on the flaps of the cornea when it is created anew. You’ll actually be surprised at how quickly you get free from the operating table.

Even after knowing the whole procedure, you can still request a sedative that can take care of all anxiety before the treatment. Obviously, your medical condition will have to be analyzed before you’re given anything. But if you qualify and you’re anxious about the treatment, you can have it taken care of.

Myth #4: It’s Only for Myopia

As far as myths go, this one used to have a little credibility, but not anymore. LASIK, when it first came out, was a surgery to treat nearsightedness. However, with the variants that are available now, it’s used to treat all sorts of refractive errors including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

Furthermore, vision problems caused by problems such as presbyopia might not come under the domain of problems treated by LASIK itself. However, variants such as multifocal LASIK, blended vision and monovision can be opted to treat these problems.

Myth #5: You Can Go Blind

People assume that by having lasers penetrating your eyes, you’re likely to lose your vision instead of having it corrected.

Not much can be said about such a myth except for pointing out the obvious orthodox mentality behind it. The statistics and results speak for themselves. You’ll find that there are no records of anyone ever going blind after getting a LASIK surgery. The only complications that have been recorded are minor maladjustments that either subside over time or are corrected later.

These are some of the major myths about LASIK surgery that no one should believe. It’s natural to have questions about the process. However, believing these myths will only prevent you from having surgery that might be perfect for your vision problems. If you have any reservations, refer to the best eye clinic in Dubai to make sure you get the reliable treatment.
