Diabetic Eye Disease

The consequences of diabetes mellitus are far-reaching and very intricate. One of them is the diabetic eye disease and affects the blood vessels in your retina.

If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes and are starting to experience visual problems, a retina doctor in Dubai can help. In this section, we’re covering essential information about diabetic eye disease and what we can do for you in our Eye Consultants Clinic.

What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is a cloudy formation that develops in the eye lens and usually interferes with visual function. Visual impairments depend on the density of the cataract and its location.

In most cases, cataracts develop after 55 years of age, but younger patients and infants may also develop one.

When a cataract clouds our vision, the visual impulse does not adequately reach the retina. The light is not focused, and the patient cannot distinguish his visual field. It happens because the lens changed its protein and fiber structure and lost its transparency.

What Is Diabetic Eye Disease?

Diabetic eye disease is also known as diabetic retinopathy. It features progressive destruction of the retina and one of the leading causes of blindness in diabetic patients. This destruction is triggered by alterations in the retinal blood vessels, which fail to deliver enough oxygen and nutrients to the eye structures, causing progressive tissue damage.

The blood vessels become weak and start leaking fluid. New blood vessels begin to grow and can bleed. The retina starts to get covered by membranes that exert traction on the retina causing detachment and loss of function.
