LASIK Surgeries: The Process and The Problems

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. In ophthalmology, this is a surgical process that aims at correcting various types of refractive errors found in the eye. With a remarkable success rate, this surgery is one of the most preferred ones among patients across the world. Patients have reported having a near-perfect 20/20 vision after the surgery. Although it’s available in a lot of places, the best results won’t come from just any eye clinic in Dubai. You should pick one that has a good rapport and experienced surgeons.

Who Needs It?

Patients who suffer from various refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism can opt for LASIK. Refractive errors are the reason why people have blurred vision. These problems can be present since birth or developed over time or due to an injury. Leaving these errors untreated can lead to amblyopia which is a very severe state close to blindness.

It’s crucial to note that it’s not a surgery that is recommended for everyone. This is because not everybody’s anatomical structure can sustain the use of the lasers involved in the process. Therefore, it’s imperative that you discuss everything with your ophthalmologist and figure out the best course of action.

What Is The Surgical Process?

LASIK surgeries involve using one femtosecond laser that creates a flap in the exterior layer of the cornea. This laser has a wavelength of 1053nm. Out of the depth of 550um of the cornea, this flap is created as deep as 105um.

The second laser that this procedure uses is an excimer laser that is responsible for reshaping the cornea altogether. Based on the problem that is being treated, the excimer laser reacts with the structure accordingly. If myopia patients are under treatment, the laser involves flattening the curvature of the cornea. In hyperopia patients, surgeons use the laser to steepen the surface and shape of the cornea.

The whole process is done in less than 30 minutes and you can leave after an examination.

There are various types of LASIK surgery and even an Ultra LASIK surgery along with other alternatives as well. The following types are the most commonly used ones:

Wave Front Optimization LASIK:

In this surgery, Wavefront equipment is used to program the laser to repair the structure and shape of the cornea. This is done by feeding it a lot of specified details about the patient’s corneal curvature. Due to its digital nature, it’s very accurate and produces ideal results. This type of LASIK also decreases the risks of spherical aberrations.

Wavefront Guided LASIK:

This surgery performs the same function as the above but involves using details of how light travels in the patient’s eye. Customized according to the needs of the patient, this surgery also proves to be an enhanced version that provides excellent results.

Topography-Guided LASIK:

The most advanced of its kind, the topography-guided LASIK procedure is commonly called Contoura Vision correction. This is a laser surgery that consists of innovative technological enhancements that help experts map out the exact areas of the cornea that require reshaping. Not only is it really fast as compared to other procedures, but it’s also the safest process around. Like Ultra LASIK surgery in Dubai, Contoura Vision is also gaining a lot of rightfully earned fame in optical surgeries.
