Conditions That Make You Ineligible for LASIK Surgery

LASIK surgery is a popular means to correct refractive vision errors such as:

  • Myopia (near-sightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism (when the cornea is more oval than round)

Even though LASIK is an effective surgery and brings incredible results, it may not be suitable or beneficial for everyone. Your eye specialist at Eye Consultants Center in Dubai would guide you regarding that. However, those who may be considering getting LASIK should give this a read.

Today, we are going to look at health, eye conditions, and other factors that make you ineligible for getting this surgery:

Health Conditions that Impact Your Ability to Get LASIK

You have to be in good health to get LASIK surgery. As with any other surgeries, getting LASIK also comes with the risk of infection. Therefore, if you suffer from any health conditions discussed below, LASIK may not be the ideal option for you:

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Chronic pain such as migraine, fibromyalgia, or irritable bowel syndrome
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Moreover, some medications decrease the functions of immune systems and increase the risk factors of surgeries like LASIK.

Eye Conditions That Impact your Eligibility to Get LASIK

Size of Pupils

The size of the pupil also matters if you are planning to get LASIK. Large pupils are not usually good candidates for this surgery. This can increase the chances of side effects after the surgery such as blurry vision or poor night vision. Your ophthalmologist will measure the size of the pupils.

Having said that, bear in mind that large pupils do not always disqualify you from getting LASIK though. It could still be an option.

Other Eye Conditions

The surgeons would want you to look at a fixed spot or object continuously for at least a minute to perform the procedure. Eye conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma along with eye infections and surgeries can hinder the surgical procedure. Therefore, this should be taken into account prior to getting surgery.

Other Conditions That Impact your Eligibility of Getting LASIK

Age

Like other organs of the body, our eyes grow the same way. They also get impacted by the different hormonal changes that a child goes through during adolescence. Most of the bodies stop growing when puberty ends. Owing to this reason, there is no strict age requirement for getting LASIK. The key to be a good candidate that your glasses or contact lens power should be relatively stable.

Pregnancy or Breast-Feeding Children

Pregnant and breast-feeding women go through numerous hormonal and physical changes. This includes their eyesight as well. Women often change their contact prescriptions and glasses when they are pregnant. Sometimes, these changes in eyesight are temporary, sometimes not. However, having a stable vision is crucial to get optimal results out of LASIK.

As pregnant women also experience diabetes and preeclampsia, these conditions impact eye health that increases the risk involved with the procedure.

Stable Vision

LASIK requires stable vision over the year before the surgery and stable contacts or glasses prescription for at least two years.

You would not get good results if your eyesight is continuously degrading, and requiring a prescription change every 12 months or so.  Some of them are not within the limits of LASIK, in that case, your eye specialist could advise you.

Considerations of Risks Before Getting LASIK

Getting a surgery is a decision you must think through. When you are looking to get permanent corrective eye surgery, such as LASIK, you need to think about the risks as well.

Hobbies such as contact sports or habits regarding work have to be taken into account. You might want to think of a suitable alternative to LASIK if you are into sports where air blows to the face or eyes. These include boxing, football, martial arts, wrestling, and hockey. If that is not an option, you might have to wait sometime to return to these activities after getting surgery so that they are properly and completely healed.

The process of eye healing occurs at a fast pace. This lets you get back to your normal activities and life. With LASIK, your risks regarding these sports may significantly drop, since it removes the need of wearing any kind of contacts or glasses that might get damaged or dislodged during the activity.

At Eye Consultants, the state-of-the-art machinery and technology are used to get excellent results from LASIK, resulting in improved vision without needing to get glasses or contacts.
